Women's Tennis All-Ivy, Postseason Awards Announced

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Dartmouth’s Kristina Mathis and Yale’s Samantha Martinelli earned the Ivy League women’s tennis postseason awards following a vote of the League’s eight head coaches.

Princeton’s Laura Granville was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year, Dartmouth senior Kristina Mathis was unanimously selected as the Player of the Year and Yale freshman Samantha Martinelli reaped Rookie of the Year honors.

Mathis posted a 23-13 singles mark en route to a unanimous First Team All-Ivy nod—the first of her career in singles. She went 12-7 during the spring season, including a 6-1 mark at the No. 1 position in League play. The Greer, S.C., product is the Ivy League’s top ITA-ranked singles player at No. 107. Her sole League loss was to Brown’s Maddie Stearns (7-6, 6-3). Mathis also went 19-15 in doubles play this season.

Mathis is the third Big Green student-athlete to be recognized as the Player of the Year, joining Rebecca Dirksen (1999) and Taylor Ng (2015).

Martinelli is 1-of-2 dual First Team All-Ivy recipients this season, earning honors for singles and doubles. The Denver, Colo., native went 21-11 at No. 1 singles and 12-5 at No. 1 doubles this season—including a 3-4 singles and a 3-2 doubles mark in League play. She was 12-9 in singles during the spring campaign and 10-4 in doubles action with Elizabeth Zordani

Martinelli is the third Yale freshman to earn Rookie of the Year accolades, joining Cynthia Obsitnik (1998) and Madeleine Hamilton (2013).

Sixth-year head coach Granville led Princeton to their fourth Ivy League title—and second unblemished 7-0 season in League play—during her tenure. The Tigers concluded regular-season dual match play with a 19-3 record and need just one win in the NCAA Tournament to match the program-record 20 win season from 2010 (20-6). Princeton, which will return to the NCAA Tournament with Ivy League’s automatic bid for the fourth time over the past five seasons, currently sits at No. 47 in the ITA Division I Women’s National Team Ranking.

Granville has earned 3-of-4 Ivy League Coach of the Year nods (2015, 2016, 2018) since the award began in 2015.

Cornell, Dartmouth and Yale paced all Ivies with three First Team All-Ivy selections, while Harvard was the lone program to produce a pair of First Team All-Ivy singles players.

Cornell was represented on the First Team by unanimous selection senior Priyanka Shah (singles and doubles) and sophomore Ananya Dua (doubles), while Dartmouth had three unanimous selections in Mathis (singles), senior Julia Schroeder (doubles) and freshman Abigail Chiu (doubles). Yale senior Elizabeth Zordani (doubles) joined dual selection Martinelli (singles and doubles) on the First Team.

Harvard junior Erica Oosterhout and Princeton senior Katrine Steffensen—both unanimous picks—rounded out the First Team All-Ivy singles lineup, alongside Crimson sophomore Jenna Friedel

Brown boasted a League-high six All-Ivy selections—all Second Team. Senior Maddie Stearns (singles and doubles), senior Alyza Benotto (singles and doubles), freshman Courtney Kowalsky (doubles) and sophomore Devon Jack (doubles) were the Bears award winners.

Columbia had four Second Team All-Ivy honorees to tie Cornell and Dartmouth with four award recipients overall. The Lions were represented by freshman Christie Wan (singles and doubles), freshman Jennifer Kerr (singles) and senior Adi Milstein (doubles).

Cornell’s Dua and Dartmouth’s Schroeder earned Second Team All-Ivy singles honors to pair with their First Team doubles nods. Princeton freshman Stephanie Schrage claimed the final Second Team All-Ivy nod in singles.
